Which Magazine Best Buy Composts

In the latest edition of Which? Gardening, they publish the results of their compost tests - I have included theresults in order below - some surprises methinks.
Best Buy Peat Based Composts;
1. B&Q Multipurpose Compost (88%)
2. B&Q John Innes No2 Compost (71%)
3. Westland West Multipurpose Compost (71%)

Best Buy Peat Free Composts;
1. Westland West Peat Free Multipurpose Compost (58%)
2. New Horizon Growbag (58%)

In both categories the composts that performed the worst in their tests (which consited of both growing seeds of basil and petunia and potting on antirrhinum and cabbage plug plants) were Homebase Peat Free, Vital Earth Seed and Potting Compost and Homebase Multipurpose Peat Free Compost.
B&Q were also the cheapest at 6p per litre for the Multipurpose Compost.

yes, I concur with Homebase peat free, it was pants. I buy Wickes own brand at 4p/litre (if it's on special offer otherwise it's also 6p/litre)

I always get number one son to buy me a bale of B & Q multipurpose for my birthday in March. Never had any problems with it and it's great value.

Thanks for sharing the results. I do prefer the B&Q muti to most, particularly when it's on offer

I've got the B&Q stuff in my greenhouse waiting patiently to be out to good use- I knew I was on to a winner, soooo cheap!

I don't see why peat-free has to be so kak! I think its because they don't leave it to compost down long enough - too quick trying to make money from people with limited choices re: buying peat-free, BL**DY ANNOYING!

Will stick with New Horizons, s'okay...

Just bought B&Q 125litres with 15% online coupon - last weekend .

It's great stuff..

Can't understand it - think B&Q multipurpose compost although cheaper is pants! Found it contains great chunks of whatever??? which doesn't break down at all and also it dries out so quickly. I now use Westlands and haven't had any problems (fingers crossed).
