  • Various Compost heads up - add your offers here....

Went to B&Q with the intentions of buying 420lts (6x70lt bags) of compost for £20 (3 bags for a £10)........On closer inspection, they were doing 4x33lt for £5 which equates to 528 lts for £20........... Price per lt = 3.78p......Result.

I have a small Yaris & I put 4 bags in the front & 12 in the back with the back seats down. So long as its balanced. Think how much 5 people weigh.

Did you go to the big warehouse B&Q in South Leeds near Elland Road?

I've just called the mini warehouse one in Keighley and they don't have any 33l bags. They are doing the 3 x 70l for £10 so I may pop down anyway.

Not really worth going to the one in Leeds as by the time I've figured in the petrol it would probably wipe out the extra saving.

Oh and if you want timber the wood yard at that B&Q in South Leeds is the cheapest in the area. We got some for raised beds.

Focus DIY Compost Offer as well

Bigmally's post about B&Q compost got me checking out all the local DIY garden centres nearest to me to see if there were any more weekend offers.

If you don't have a B&Q near you, but do know of a Focus DIY their offer is 3 for 2 on Shamrock 75 litre bags costing £11.98. Offer on til Monday 22nd.

Focus compost was rubbish (lumps) when I used it. Never again.
Don't much like Wickes either. Never again.

B&Q's own Multipurpose at under £7 for 125 litres (120?) is best imo

If you are in the Wolverhampton/Bridgnorth/Telford area there is a fantastic place at a village called Stableford. TFM farmers superstore - 4 x70 litre bags of compost for a tenner and LOADS of other goodies. Went and bought some fence posts for £1.40 each, hanging baskets for £1.50 and all sorts of good stuff! Proper little treasure trove.

I used the Focus one last year and agree it was quite coarse with lumps in it but it was good to use in my back garden which can get water logged so the dry matter helped a bit.

B&Q Multi Purpose came out top in a Which? trial and didn't rate the Homebase one at all.

We have a local gardening suppliers in a warehouse on the trading estate down the road who is usually good and helpful. Think I'll continue to support him this year even though he is slightly more expensive as at least I'll save on the petrol costs to get to the DIY places.
