How much, Beefy? I bought a 4kg box for £1.75 from Wilko today.

I think they were £7- £8 for 10 Kg with one free. Cant remember exactly as I was getting a lot of stuff for the gardens at work .

But are they 'real' organic, ie approved by the Soil Association', or are they just called 'organic' because chicken poo is made up of organic 'ingredients' (as in not 'inorganic', such as metal, ingredients!)?

No idea SBP . They are the Westland ones - White bucket with a blue lid .I use them in flower beds and as Im not eating the roses I dont much care.

Fair enough Beefy, I just prefer not to buy products that will have come from Battery hens.

Good point, sbp - I looked at the box and mine said organic ... but I don't want to buy battery hen poo either.

WHat's a better alternative, given I haven't got the composting thing going yet?

Sorry manda I was a bit over the top let me clarify myself .
At work (its a school ) Im not allowed to use FYM due to health and saftey etc so I am limited to using fertilizers or the such like that dont smell or the kids cant harm themselves if they fall in it .
So when I was in B&Q on Friday looking for something to give the soil and the plants a boost for the season ahead I saw this and it fullfills the above criteria. As the flowerbeds have been pretty much neglected for the last 5 years other than a handfull of chemical fertilizer once a year and then sprayed for the rest of the year Im hoping that I can encourage the worms back to try and restore the natural balance again.
The other purchases were the B&Q fym pellets (3 bags) and their multi purpose compost (1 bag) plus 2 buckets of the above chicken pellets.
Now at home its a different matter as my father has a farm and I have acess to as much FYM as I want.If you want traceability - we grow the wheat ,barley and grass that the cattle eat.The beef cattle all come from our own dairy herd that my grandfather started in 1952 with two cows from Cork in Southern Ireland .All animalls on the farm today can be traced back to those two cows and all the cows are pedigree Fresian/Holstein with papers to prove who they are.
While what I do in the school may not please the organic purists its the best option that I can come up with under the rules that I have to work with.

I am not having a go at anyone in this post Im just trying to clarify what I do and why.

Hazel we bought a huge bag (14kg) of proper certified organic chicken poo - Rooster - Rooster poo - think we might have got it from Tamar Organics or HDRA, can't remember.

I'm not having a go at you Beefy so please 'back off'. Most people don't seem to know the difference between 'organically produced' and containing 'organic' (ie not inorganic) ingredients - manufacturers and retailers like B&Q make good marketing use of this fact.

As a veggie I do not want to use animal products from factory farming - that is my choice. As Hazel expressed an interest in 'organic' products I thought my post might give her more info. At NO stage did I have a go at YOUR choice, except to clarify the 'organic' bit.
