Mine is a small commercial one which takes 12 x 54 cell trays - I use it to start toms and chillies and anything else that I want to start early but as I supply local garden centres with young tomato and chilli plants, I can justify its' existence. It too has capillary matting but if you soak your compost then allow it to drain before you sow, then there is not really too much need for this. The best feature is that I can determine exactly what temperature I want the compost to be by using the probe attached to the thermostat.

I bought two heated B&Q ones for 9.99 I think, usual price was 13.99 ?

Then I bought a load of other none heated ones, as above th heated ones get faster germination, but I failed a few times leaving a few in there too long. I now take them out the moment they've broken the surface... the ones I didn't were so weak they just died

I've now got my heated propagators \0/ what should I put in the bottom? I was thinking kids play sand?

I have a heated prop but never seem to have a good place to put it, i.e. in a windowsill with a plug nearby.

I said capillary matting the OH said sand, she's worried about water and electric, do you think B&Q do capillary matting?

I just bunged compost in mine, and sewed directly into that!

Pricked 'em out into pots when they were ready, and got the next lot in. That's when I realized I had sown faaaaaaaaaaaaar too many of everything!

Mine came with a piece then I bought some more to use on my bench from Poundstretcher or it could have been Aldi but it might be the wrong time of year for them to sell it, you could use an piece of a towel or a wad of kitchen roll.

You don't need to put anything in the bottom of it, just sow in pots / trays and put them in the propogator. Capilliary matting is fine but you don't need it although if you really want something there then damp newspaper would do just as well.

Damp newspaper why didn't I think of that

Oh well I popped to the GC and got a meter of capilliary matting for £2 I've got plenty left so I can use it in the GH.

I use mine for brooding chicks. I use the airing cupboard for germinating seeds!
