  • Charcoal in water butts.

    Anyone done this????

I was nattering to a local- and they said they chuck in a couple of handfuls of normal BBQ charcoal into their water butts to help keep the water clear of algae.

Never heard of this before- barley straw in ponds yes- but never charcoal in water butts!
I'm going to give that one a try for sure!!!

    No but... it might work

I keep my butts in the shade (or with a lid on) to keep off the algae

Would it have the same effect as the carbon pellets you put in fish tank filters?

I use charcoal in the water butts and in the trays for my greenhouse watering trays. I think I heard it from Bob Flowerdew maybe...somewhere or other. It does keep the algae down.
