Storing Pots and Seed Trays

What's the best way of keeping / storing a good stock of pots and seed trays without going over the top and having far too many, most of which are never used and just clutter up greenhouse staging and shed space? I never know how many it's sensible to keep and end up buying more, then finding I had that size at home, buried under a load of other stuff.

Surely there must be a foolproof way of having the pots and trays you need to hand when you need them.... I laughed at the seed-aholic thread (guilty ), but I must be a pot-aholic too by the look of my shed and yard.

A very good question and one I have not solved either. I keep the seed trays under the staging and have a supermarket basket which i stack my small pots in. As for how many or what size, well I only use deep ones and have far too many of these. Never know when i might need them.

Good question Muckdiva. Sadly I don't think there is an answer but will love to hear what other grapes have to say.
I have an area , covered over, at the back of the shed where I keep trays, pots etc. I try to be tidy, and stack pots of the same size inside each other. I also try to be ruthless and throw out pots that won't stack in an orderly manner - only to find I'm looking for a pot that size the next week !
Interesting to hear what other grapes do.

Too many pots/seed trays?
Is that possible we have just acquired two bags(Large compost)full on free serve an now have enough...........just.
As for storage all I can suggest is a cool(ish) dry place stacked in their different sizes.

I always think I have too many pots, a couple of years ago - a neighbour in the horticultural society in the UK gave me two large sack fulls of 2.5 inch square for pricking out etc - but this year I'm running out across the board, all sizes seem to be running short. Storage in large wooden fruit boxes (free from the supermarkets, just pick them up as your leave, also make good labels) under the bench now and in the wine cave for the winter.

As for seed trays, I also stack under the work bench. Interesting that here we don't get plants on UK style trays as such, like the ones for round pots, they're like open weave plastic trays which take 6, 10, 12 or 20 square pots which I prefer for carrying plants in - and they're not as sort of wobbly and ungainly as the larger UK trays.

I'm off to buy more cell trays and also a couple more propogators as I'm running out of places to prick out and pot on. I did buy a pack of 5 seed trays yesterday which I knew I needed, only to find a pack of 5 in the shed!! I think I had better go check exactly what I have got before I go spending more money!!

Have you thought to use those *String Hammocks* that kids keep their teddies in? Or make your own from an old net curtain and find a space to hook it up. That way they will be off the ground and you are less likely to either knock them over or stand on them ...Lauren

This is where my defunct plastic greenhouse came in, after experiencing the usual blown over problems I put it in the greenhouse to use as staging, use the top two shelves for plants and seeds and store the pots on the bottom two, on their sides in long "rolls". Now I need a pile of pots that need to be washed before reusing -there's just not enough room!
