Wilkinsons half price sale

Wilkinsons have reduced all their bulbs (begonia, lilies dahlias etc & potatoes & onion setts to half price.

I've been looking at their offers this lunch time - I was tempted by anther bag of onion sets (154 in my last bag, so 300~ should be plenty if I get another ) as they were half price.

However, I'm concerned it may be too late for them to grow to a decent size (smallish is ok, but I want usable onions, not picklers).

Any thoughts? (Not the right forum to ask this, I know).

If you have the space - try it - after all the onion sets are costing you next to nothing, so even if you don't get much of a crop you won't have lost a fortune.

Suppose so; probably 2/3rds of my plot hasn't been divided up and planned properly yet so I'm sure I can fit them in. I already have 154 (count 'em!) sets in the ground and about 50 shallot sets so maybe it's a bit extravagant, despite being cheap.

There are only two of us (and a baby) to feed!

Nooooo,ti's not extravagant,they will keep when the grown up,,thought i had to many last year,but nooo,laste year was not so good for onions as several rotted,theirfore,always plant more than you think,subject to space,several shallots survived and are growing well in the lottie,plus 2 more onion strings left,so go for it,you could always plant them enmas in few trays till the rootwell,that way you can sort the good from the bad,and no gaps in the rows when planted out,

Might give it a go then - thanks; I was just reading earlier about how they put on green growth 'til midsummer, then use the leaves to put on bulb growth - the less time to grow leaves, the less onion you get at the end of it.

I was a bit worried there wouldn't be enough time to put out plenty of leaves.
