No more costly plant pot saucers

I've been looking around for plant pot saucers and couldn't believe how expensive they are, especially for the larger plant pot.

I found foil flan dishes in Poundworld today, 3 for £1. Brought them home & tested them out... They are amazing



I also bought some flan trays (again 3 for £1) for the tomato plants in the greenhouse because they dry up too quick when it's warm.

I spent a small fortune this year as it's my first for growing my own & I'm delighted to offer a penny saving tip to fellow GYO'ers on here.

25p each for plastic ones just the right size for morrisons pots from car boot..

The Ali ones are ok as quick fix but they go holey, I only got 1 year out of them, so long term not cost effective.

Poundland had some packs of 3 placcy bowls which worked ok with a few pebbles in the bottom to stabilise the pots.

Some ready meals (yeah I know I should be ashamed of myself) come in round plastic bowls. I use those!

I use those for seed saving later in the year as well; really good for beans. Not that I'll have many beans this year [sob sob]. Usually I have about 40 varieties so need small trays otherwise it all goes a bit wrong.

The meat trays that you get from supermarkets that have a large number of chops in, or a biggish chicken are also useful; they aren't round so they aren't as aesthetically pleasing of course (but do I care?), but still do a good job for slightly smaller pots.

Costco celebration cakes are protected by deep round plastic covers. Marvellous for putting your Morrison buckets in. ........... Our office seems to have many celebrations

Thelma the ones on the greenhouse floor don't look like they will last but will do for now because I didn't want my tomatoes drying out on hot sunny days (we can dream can't we?) whilst I'm at work.

But yes, next year I shall be eating more ready made meals & eating lots of celebration cakes methinks

Have to agree with VC - I buy ready meals in circular containers from co-op when reduced to virtually nothing! Call me a Tight Wad - I'll be happy to hear my name called out loud! These are actually very suitable - you get the cheap meal and the added extra of the pot saucer which may well last longer than alu as said already they hole quite quickly. Completely free option if you get a bargain and quick 'dinner fix' into same!

I use the plastic pots mushrooms come in. They are about the same size as my tomato pots (which in turn are old raspberry and other small shrub pots) plus they are 3 inches deep or so, so can provide a decent reservoir.

I have used the brownie trays as seed trays in the past too but they do fail after one use (plus bend when you carry them!)
