What is the difference between a self sharpening blade and a blade that does not come into contact?

I am thinking about a push lawn mower for allotment paths.
Maybe there should be a separate forum for tools, but there seems to be too many already.

I have just got a qualcast push mower from freecycle and its great, Just fits in the car and quite light, and cuts the grass too.
