DIY Compost

Years ago before garden centres and B+Q, etc, gardeners would have had to make their own potting compost. One of the useful ingredients would be leaf mold ( see 'Growing Techniques - Pigletwillie). Another would be loam, usually made by stacking turf until it rotted down. I was wandering if any Grapes had made their own potting compost over the years and if so, what was your favourite recipe and how would it compare with modern shop bought compost.

If I've missed a thread already discussing this, I apologise, but I had a good look and couldn't find one.

Terrier, the traditional way of getting seed compost was to use the stuff the moles had dug up in their mole hills. Beautiful, fine, pest free stuff. Shame about the lawn.

When I've tried that as soon as I water it, it sets like cement. I mix it with varmiculite, sand and shop bought compost for growing on though.
