Get some large plastic beer 'glasses', often for free outside pubs. Have one yourself!
Slice the bottoms off (I use a craft or Stanley knife).
Plant your bean, then carefully thread it through the plastic collar, narrow end down. Gently twist the collar into the earth to secure.
Water through the cup, it will go straight to the roots without disturbing the soil.
Slugs can't be bothered to face the equivalent of climbing the Eiger, your beans will also have a little support to start them off.
You can slit down the side of the collar to remove when the bean is well established, if you like. I usually leave mine on and re-use next season.
