Slug-free beans- no pellets

Get some large plastic beer 'glasses', often for free outside pubs. Have one yourself!
Slice the bottoms off (I use a craft or Stanley knife).
Plant your bean, then carefully thread it through the plastic collar, narrow end down. Gently twist the collar into the earth to secure.
Water through the cup, it will go straight to the roots without disturbing the soil.
Slugs can't be bothered to face the equivalent of climbing the Eiger, your beans will also have a little support to start them off.
You can slit down the side of the collar to remove when the bean is well established, if you like. I usually leave mine on and re-use next season.

Good tip Raybon, before I had the cages I used to use 4" lengths of downpipe as collars around my Brassicas. It seemed to work ok.

Slugs can't be bothered ....climbing the Eiger

As with everything, there're up sides and down sides

I used to use plastic collars but found more slugs and snails inside them than out (they create a nice warm moist habitat).
Snails are expert climbers (you'll find them at the top of 8ft bean canes) and slugs can go underground, under the plastic collar

No system is foolproof. But for the most part it works fine - and best of all it means you don't have to resort to using (indiscriminate) poisons that are harmful to wildlife and contaminate the land you're growing food on...
