When I last had my nails manicured (futile exercise I know) I arrived, to the dismay of the manicurist, with half the garden behind my nails (nothing unusual).

Aha I bite mine and if they are still grubby I use Swarfega with little beads in

I should have explained better...its a pencil that you use as a nail cleaner - as well as taking away the dirt, it leaves a film of white stuff behind your nail so they look sparkly clean

Just use toothpaste!

My only vice is lovely long manicured nails but I like to garden without gloves when I can (just doesn't feel right with gloves on). My manicurist advised me to scrub my nails with a toothbrush and whitening toothpaste as it's more abrasive - works a treat. When I pop into the "shed" for some bits 'n bobs the old boys look at me with raised eyebrows "You can't be a proper gardener with nails like that" - well the proof is on my plot .

Whats wrong with soap & a nailbrush? It works everytime for me!!

Not wishing to be sexist (more appreciating the differences between the sexes), whats wrong with a bit of elbow grease and scrubbing??

Not only are my nails ruined from gardening.... my hands are very dry and I get lots of ingrained dirt, especially in my thumb skin and forefinger (even though I wear gloves) - I scrub them with a nailbrush and have long soaks in the bath ('onest guv'nor!!) but my hands are in a very bad way. Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with the dry skin and the ingrained dirt? Thanks.

Hi vicipvo,

Cheap and easy is a drop of olive oil and a teaspoon of sugar rubbed well into the hands and then washed off with soap and water. You will be amazed at the results and the amount of grime it moves.

hi blackcatlois, i got my mum Marigold ointment from Napiers on the net, cost a bomb but so does most good herbal things. She loved it and it works well for her, she believes gardening is therapeutic without gloves. I dont have that problem, since i wear gloves and scrub my nails with brush and soap and ordinary or no handcream in the summer. Try it see what you think

burts bees hand salve should be good, i use their cuticle cream and its the best one out of 5 others ive ever tried.

Rub barrier cream into hands then scrape nails along hands barrier cream should fill space behind nails.Barrier cream is easier to scrub out.

I've given up and now live with broken short nails. They were once my pride and joy but now that honour goes to my caulis, tomatoes and other babies!
