  • Will turning over grass turves kill the grass effectively?

I'm turning a lawn area into a bed. I've sliced away turves by using a spade to cut in underneath them and then turned them over so the grass is in the dirt and the roots are uppermost. Will this be effective in killing the grass? Otherwise there's a big job ahead to get rid of all the turves.

So long as there isn't any couch grass in them they will die. Better if you were to dig a trench and put them on the bottom then cover them with the soil from the next trench and so on.

Thanks, Roitelet. I've covered them as best I can without digging any trenches. I'll see how it goes. The grass is only about six weeks old and is made up of good quality grasses, sown from seed. I sowed it to overlap the bed so that I could cut a good edge to the new lawn. I'm hoping that the overturned turves will provide some nutrients to the soil in the bed, as a bonus. The bed's for flowers and shrubs that will go in next spring.

It will be fine as the grass is so young.

If you are not going to use the ground till spring, you could throw some black plastic or cardboard over it.

Come to think of it, I've got some weed matting that's already cut to size which raises another question I've been meaning to ask....http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...run_86797.html

I place turves soil/root side up in heaps and let it compost down, it's then called loam and is an excellent potting compost base.

I pile them up into a two-sided wall, fill the middle with manure, cover the whole thing over with weed supressing mat, and grow pumpkins etc in the top for a couple of years. Then breakk it open and spread it.
