Showing Tips please...

It's getting close to showing time of year (ours is early August), and whilst it's probably not been a great year on the growing side of things, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for showing tips. Unfortunately, I'll be asking for them, not giving them, as I'm a complete novice at showing and only do it for fun.

One class I'll definately be entering is Shallots, as these have done pretty well. Do Shallots need presenting in a similar way to onions, ie. all that stem wrapping malarky, sitting proudly on a plate of sand! or can they just be arranged in a more informal setting on the plate?

Gosh- never done any showing! But a few Grapes have, so eventually you should get some tips!

To be honest Littlemark, i asked for tips last year from another 'web site' it had a couple of b's in the title and c.

I was told in no uncertain terms by a poster that those who show don't like to give out tips as you could become competition to them.

I want to show for the first time this year, so last year i visited lots of local shows, and two big ones with a camera and note pad, took lots of photos of winners then noted the varieties that won.
Keep the show schedules so you can plan ahead the following year, and note how many entries in each section, several I visited had no entries or just 1 or 2 in several sections.

Did research over the winter and and am now hoping for the better weather.

Our show (little village) doesn't seem to have any showing rules. I put a few things in various classes this year for the first time and really felt I was flying blind However, it seemed fairly obvious to me that in the 'plate of 6 broad beans' class they should all be the same size, clean, not too mature etc. and in the 'plate fo 6 pea pods' class, again, clean, blemish free, same size, all with their little tiddly bit at the top etc. I did really (unexpectedly!) well, so go with your instincts.

It's worth seeing what doesn't get many entries. I realised that I would have been in with a chance with ' plate of 5 different vegetables' as there were only 2 other entries. I'd have got a 3rd prize at least!

A friend of mine who used to do a bit of showing on the tray of mixed vegetables he used to put the purple and green Koli Rabi to catch the Judge's eye it worked jacob
