How to store seed?

This year (so far) I've had a number of failed sowings and I've put it down to bad seed storage.

So far unviable seed in

Chilli - 4 varieties - All in self seal bags, and 1 year old -( 2 x Complete Failure)
Onions - Bedfordshire champion (Complete Failure)
Shallots - New Seed this year - EoY for Seed Suppliers (4 seedlings)
Broad Beans - Aquaduice - (Complete Failure)
Lettuce - (Complete Failure) - Was growing for cut and grow again

So I'm putting it down to where I stored the seed.

They are in a Cracker box. Under the bench in the porch.

Thinking the byre this year, or perhaps the man cave.

What do you do?

Sealed in air-tight plastic food boxes in the coolest room of the house, which is something like an old-fashioned larder, on the north side. Porches and byres are probably too variable in temperature, and may be too damp as well. Don't know about the man cave since I'm not a man and don't have one.

Onion seeds don't tend to last very long, but chilli seeds should last a few years. It's also a good idea to check the packing and expiry dates on the packets before buying to make sure the seeds are relatively fresh to start with.
