Actually, you've just reminded me of when I first started working in hospitals in the 1970's- and loads of peeps used to have mottled patches on one side of a leg- from sitting too close to the coal fire over many years!

i can remember my nans legs being like that, my mum used to go nuts at her from sitting too close to the fire.
