I don't believe anyone really knows. The weather forecast is usually right for the next 24-48 hours and gets the trend right for the next 7 days (but not necessarily the timing). But anything beyond that and I doubt they really know. I think the Met Office abandoned long range forecasts because they weren't accurate enough.
We've just had a hail storm, now its merely raining, my washing is out on the line, dripping and the RHS Show opened today here in Cardiff. I truly hope it gets better - preferably by tomorrow!
Not even thinking about May yet!!!

I sometimes throw a placky tarpaulin over the lot and peg that on, its quicker than taking the clothes off the line.
Going back to the umbrella idea, the central post should have a button that, when pressed, an umbrella comes out of the top and automatically opens itself. It could even be rain sensitive, and open or close as required.
May is currently expected to see high pressure often centred out to the west of the UK, with further higher than average pressure to the east of the country too, leaving the British Isles themselves in between the two. Another warmer than average month is forecast to be the outcome of this pressure pattern with rainfall widely close to average albeit with some locations potentially significantly wetter.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive
Long distance forecast is starting to look a bit grim, there is a couple of -1 in may, damn and I was all set to plant my toms in there growbags, think I'll probably sow another lot of squash/cucs, ones I got now will be far too leggy
