It is looking increasingly certain that the warm and dry weather will disappear as spring begins at the end of this week and we will move into a more unsettled, wet and windy spell.

I understand Paris , as from today,is limiting which cars can enter the city centre because of this.

Company I worked for a few years back had a factory in Milan. They had a similar approach. I asked if it caused disruption to them, "Not really", they said, "we all have 2 number plates, one odd , one even!"

All change as we start a new month, with much more unsettled and cooler weather arriving. A yellow warning for wind has been issued for Sunday into Monday as a small but rapidly deepening area of low pressure crosses the country. The exact path of this is uncertain at present but it has the potential to be quite nasty. It has already been named storm Freya.

So, this time last week we had been having record warmth for February, and now its snowing in Ireland. Storm Freya is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK, with the strongest winds in the south and west, moving northeast through the night across to about the Humber. As the low moves away the wind turns into the north, hence the snow, and this is forecast to move into the north of England over night.

The weather looks likely to remain unsettled for the next week or 2, with low pressure systems moving in regularly from the west. Wet and windy at times, with some much needed rain. Always wettest in the west. Temperatures slightly below average but fluctuating as the lows move through and sometimes cold enough for hill snow (as at present) in the north.

Some of the lows could bring strong winds, so keep an eye out for warnings.

Interesting - the version I know of that is "The north wind doth blow and we shall have snow". Interestingly neither of the books that I have on old weather lore mention this one (both written by people in the south of England) so it must be a northern saying.

I'm presuming that means 2cars, and not switching number plates?

I took it as meaning they have two sets of number plates and just switch them as needed to avoid ridiculous rules But yeah, having two INDIVIDUAL cars makes more sense LOL


Customer who works nights said it had been trying to snow overnight up here in Northumberland. Heavy rain since about 5pm yesterday but now, midday, it's all sunshine once more.

My week off, by the way, has been cancelled - without telling me!!!! First I knew was when I went in to work at 2pm on Saturday afternoon and the rota was *finally!* up. Very annoyed!!! I still have 2 weeks to take before March 31st so I refuse to lose out on them!

Interesting - the version I know of that is "The north wind doth blow and we shall have snow". Interestingly neither of the books that I have on old weather lore mention this one (both written by people in the south of England) so it must be a northern saying.

It's a nursery rhyme rather than old weather lore, I think -

The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will poor Robin do then?
Poor thing.
He’ll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing,
Poor thing.

The only March sayings I know are -

So many mists in March, so many frosts in May

and -

March winds and April showers
Bring forth the May flowers

Oh, I've been itching to get on here...

We've had such fun! My favourite bit was when the met office issued their snow warning.... after cars were already getting stuck on the A595. You can just imagine someone in an office somewhere going, "blimey, they're tweeting snow pictures in Cumbria... Quick! Get a weather warning out stat. No-one will notice it's after the fact...."

We'd been on the plot in shirt sleeves in the morning (boys and I painting raised beds, weeding and playing with a makeshift seesaw). By the afternoon it was greying over and it starting raining on and off, just lightly, by the time it was dark. After the boys were in bed I noticed a friend had posted a pic of snow on FB, "huh," I thought. "They must be away." Then I looked again and realised it was their drive... Rushed to the window to find an inch already lying with big, fat, wet flakes falling.

Well, blow me down.

Trawled social media and saw that other areas had had a couple of inches in the last half our or so and vehicles were getting stuck.

And then it got better. Blinding flash of lightning and long, loud roll of rumbling thunder. I turned to Husband and said, "okay, now someone's taking the michael..." I've never experienced thunder snow before!

Then the met office sent out their warning...

We had about two inches at our house. Two miles down the road they had drifts of six, and a friend took an hour to travel 3 miles after a bunch of cars got stuck on the A595 and tractors and 4WD vehicles had to come and pull them out.

Then it started raining and most of it was gone by the morning.

One of the many crazy things about it is that we rarely get snow in the NW of Cumbria, but this time it was the north not the south. My friend in St Bees had a temp of -0.6. At Shap, it was 6 degrees positive.

Bizarre.

But so much fun! ;-)
