Probably - the penalty for clear skies in a cold air mass tends to be frost and/or fog. It would be likely to warm up pretty quickly, its the hour or so of frost or ground frost that does the damage.

I guess I'll have to give World Naked Gardening Day a miss this year then. (4th May)

        • Mid day run of the GFS model continues the colder theme for the bank holiday - this is the precipitation type forecast for Friday

Alarmingly, this is no longer one of a few runs - most of them are now going cold:

This is a huge difference from the chart I posted yesterday! Who'd be a weather forecaster...

Me too - my tomatoes are touching the grow lights this morning, but no joy in the forecast at the moment. This morning's run of the GFS looks marginally better than yesterday's in the longer term, but it can't be relied on. Currently the coldest night is likely to be tonight, but tomorrow night and Sunday night are a frost risk too. After that, hopefully, it will be less cold, but whether that means warm enough for tomatoes in unheated greenhouses is another matter entirely.

                • It was 10.18pm and I was enjoying the peace and quiet (Neil had gone to bed ), just reading my book when I heard a loud thump (Holly jumping down from high wall onto wheelie bins) then, five seconds later, the cat flap crash open! Hoping she had NOT brought another mouse in I was really pleased to see she hadn't. Then a sudden rattle against the window revealed the reason for her sudden appearance - it was HAMMERING down with hail outside!

Absolutely bouncing off the courtyard outside and, checking the thermometer, it's 4.5c I'm glad I've got my tender seedlings in the greenhouse covered with propagator lids and fleece!

                  • Some sharp showers in places yesterday, and likely again today especially near north facing coasts. Hail and thunder can't be ruled out, but sunny intervals likely in between. Probably better tomorrow with fewer showers and more sun. Still VERY chilly especially at night - the frost risk has not gone away.

Definitely still cold enough for snow on high ground, and wintery showers elsewhere, especially in the heavier showers.

Latest radar over N Yorks shows some snow (pink) over the moors and sleet (green) over Driffield/Pocklington:

                        • I cant complain about the weather today.
Temp got up to 12 deg and very xu by in the afternoon.
However, we are in for a cold frosty night.

                            • Some pretty chilly nights coming up tonight through to Saturday night (at least), especially for more northern areas where temperatures could fall below freezing in places. The latest GFS run is a gardener's nightmare - it annihilates the promised warm spell that was showing up on yesterday's forecasts, flattening it out to near average and has cool/cold nights for at least the next 10 days:

The operational run (thick green line) is one of the coldest, putting the high over Greenland and bringing the wind in from the north by next weekend:

As a result the highest forecast overnight minimum here in the next 10 days is 4C!

This is not what we want in the middle of May.
