  • Yellow warnings tonight into tomorrow for ice and snow, mainly in the north and west. Snow is difficult to forecast and there is quite a bit of disagreement between the various models about the distribution of rain and snow - don't be surprised if you wake up to a sprinkling of snow south of the warning area, especially on high ground.

Not sure there will be enough snow for either, to be honest...

        • After today's wind dies down we have a few quieter and drier days, with possible frosty nights if skies are clear, but be aware that from Sunday it is looking potentially quite stormy. The jet stream is strengthening and will send vigorous low pressure systems our way next week. While it is not yet possible to say where the strongest winds will be, it would be a good idea to make sure that everything is tied or weighed down!

Depending on the tracks of the low pressures, snow is possible on the northern side as the lows exit eastwards. Again at present this is impossible to forecast accurately, but the further north and higher up you are the more likely you are to see some snow.

          • Multiple warnings for wind and rain from Saturday through to Tuesday courtesy of storm Ciara, including an amber one for wind in parts of the south on Sunday. This is a very nasty winter storm with severe gales and strong gusts, so do take care if you plan to be out in it.

There is a distinct possibility of snow particularly in the north and west and on high ground at the start of next week.

            • The amber warning for wind tomorrow has been extended to cover much of England and all of Wales, with really only Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north east of England still in the yellow area. There is also a small area with an amber warning of rain in northern England.

              • Met office are calling fog for us tomorrow, at same time as F8 wind. It's not an uncommon combination here but it is a shock the first time you encounter it.

I guess it is a bit of advection and a bit of adiabatic cooling (we are 140m up and about 800m in from the sea)
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

                • Yes, fog and gales is a very strange combination, but if the air is damp enough it can happen. Its no different from clouds being blown along in the sky really.

                    • Impressive squall line went through here around 11am as the cold front passed over. I was watching this approach on the radar as squall lines produce the worst wind gusts and noticed a slight disconnect in the line of heaviest rain, heading straight towards here. When it arrived the wind gusts were horrendous for a couple of minutes. Just as it started to calm down a little and I was thinking the worst was over, there was a flash of lightning and a loud crack of thunder. If there is anything I detest more than gales its lightning!

I'd not been looking at Twitter, and it was just as well, because when I scrolled back through my timeline I found that one of the meteorologists I follow had posted this:

Some horrendous flooding in loads of places as a result of all this rain. I hope everyone is safe out there.

                      • There was a huge amount of thunder and lightening in the west and Midlands of Ireland this morning.
A huge amount of rain fell overnight and heavy showers throughout the day.

                        • It was extremely windy and squally here in Alnwick but nothing dangerous I thought. Popped up to the allotmentthis morning and apart from a couple of empty water butts being blown over everything is ok....even my ramshackle shed!

Still pretty windy and squally today and quite icy in that wind at times.

                          • Yes, we are in for a couple of rather chilly days with warnings for snow in places. Still thunder and lightning around today too - quite unusual for February. Thunder snow is something that the weather men can get quite excited about.

                            • Amber warning of snow for parts of southern Scotland today to go with the yellow warnings for much of the rest of Scotland and the pennines. There are various yellow warnings most days this week for snow, ice, rain and wind, with storm Dennis arriving on Saturday. This is not currently expected to be as bad as storm Ciara, but will bring strong winds to England and Wales as well as heavy rain and will probably cause more flooding. It is worth keeping an eye on.

                              • Loads more warnings, both yellow and amber in various places for rain and wind from storm Dennis this weekend. With more large rainfall amounts falling on saturated ground, flooding is expected.
