The oaks are in leaf but the ash has some way to go before the leaves appear.

As always, the oak is in leaf, the ash just starting to flower, no leaves for a couple of weeks yet. I have never seen ash out in leaf before oak. Does it actually come first anywhere in England?

At the end of the year, the oak hangs on to its leaves longer than the ash too.

I don't have any Oak nearby, but my Ash in the wild hedge is starting to open, I pollard these for stick making

This poem bizarrely works the other way in Denmark. There, ash before oak predicts a hot summer, oak before ash a wash out. So take your pick... basically, there will be some form of weather this summer, as far as I can work out !
