Sorry to say but over the last 13 years we have tried every single anti mole device, plant old wives tale going and NONE of them work. Sad as it is I now use the Mole claw traps and catch them as soon as I can. The fields around us are riddled with mole hills so there is no way we can ever be free of them, but when the runs give visitors broken ankles something has to be done.

Something that I have been told works is to stuff Ferret Poo down the runs. It's to do with the fact that Ferrets are natural predators of Moles.

Not tried it myself but I am going to try Cat Poo and see if that has any effect. The cats do catch them from time to time.

***** doesn't work especially now that it no longer smells as strong.

        Anyone got a tame Ferret?

Some of your local hunting fraternity might, although it is less likely than in UK, as most hunting here is done with gun and dog. Haven't seen anyone here working ferrets - mind you, haven't seen any wild rabbits either.

We used to have pet ferrets in the UK, and I can understand moles not wanting to share a gallery with their droppings. Phewwww!

Let us know if you find a solution that works.

Update: sitting here on 27th February and the darned mole is still revelling in his work. I've called in a 'professional' trapper and, bless him, still no luck.

Have I managed to get the canniest mole in the UK?
            Cheers

              Hi
Our mole/s at the last house would make a deliberate bee-line for the sonic thumper - I guess yours is canny and ours had a wicked sense of humour!!!

In the end, I had to accept that there was no getting rid of it/them, and used to collect the soil from the mole holes and use it for the veg.

              Then we moved.

i know a way to get rid of them ALL in one day, i was learned this secret method by an old gamekeaper/pest control man i once met.first uncover a couple of holes not next to each other then you will need a diesel car an old diesel landrover works more smoke the better, put a pipe from the exhaust into a hole and give it a good rev wait till you see plenty of smoke coming out the holes wait a while then block them up and turn off engine.. done.

                  Nice one Wayne.

Anyone know how this affects my organic status? The mole runs right through the veg beds as well as up the paddock. I'd hate to poison the veg but I'm tempted to give this a go (if I can get my hands on a diesel car - would the petrol tractor do the same thing?)

I wouldn't like to try the diesel engine method myself but there is a product called 'Biofume mole smoke' which may be worth a try. It contains castor oil & is supposed to work by forming a barrier along the tunnel so that the mole can't get to it's food source. No idea if it works but it sounds more 'organic' than diesel fumes although some by-products of the castor plant are poisonous so you'd have to check it out.

Good spot SueA - thanks for this, I'll follow it up.

Have any of you Grapeviners tried this stuff yet?

Nope - I'm still struggling on with my little 'darling'. I did buy the caster oil mole smokes but, since Moley has moved to the top of the paddock for now I'm leaving him alone. When he's not frolicking in the veggie beds I'm quite Zen about him.

I'll let you all know how they worked when I've had a go

My local GC has a very organic mole "deterrent". Simply place the charge down the gallery, set the trigger up the hole, arm, sit back and wait for the big bang!!!!
I quite fancy an exploding mole population
                            Expensive but very organic!!
                            Tx
                            p.s. has anyone else tried??

I set off more setting them than I killed moles - does your ears in it does. We have solar mole deterrent things that don't work - one of them was pushed out by a molehill whilst it was working! Now that grass curttin time is coming I shall start fretting again. We get an averageof almost 50 molehills per night in less than an acre!

Have a go with the fuses Scared 55. They seem to be working for me, not that I am saying that they are 100% effective.

They are certainly acting as a deterrent and the hills are reduced by 90%, can't be bad!!!
