Could it be snails/slugs at this time of year? It doesn't look like pigeons, and I have covered them with netting (although I know that doesn't always keep them off)

Have been lifting swedes today and there are dozens of the critters already laying eggs too !Rat

Could be slugs. I would still bet on it being pigeons though ... they land on top of the stronger plants and peck through the net. Try hanging up some CDs, or a cat's cradle of black cotton above the plants.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

I'm going for snails if the damage is at the top, and slugs if it's at the bottom.
During the winter, it's the small slugs that hang around and feast on anything near the ground - I get those horrible beige coloured extra-slimey ones. They tend not to climb very far, however, compared to snails who will shin up the stalk and rest underneath a leaf overnight, only to start munching again at dawn.
