Following on from the corn starch/ ants tip, I have found some other useful info for getting rid of pests.....
Knockout salsa -for neutralizing aphids and detering ants
2 lb ripe blemished tomatoes
1 large onion
1 lb fresh chillis
2 cloves garlic
1 cup vinegar
1/2 tsp pepper
disposable coffee filter or cheesecloth/ muslin
Roughly chop toms, onion, chillis and garlic - then blend in a food processor until liquified, add vinegar and pepper.
Strain through coffee filter/ muslin/ cheese cloth,
pour into spray bottle
spray directly onto the pests, bingo!
The Gin Zapper - one application of this weed cocktail apparently kills dandelions or just about any weed but it is intended for spot use only as it can harm plants and grass too.
1oz Gin
1oz apple cider vinegar
1 tblespoon baby shampoo
1 quart water
combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and spray weed on a hot sunny day wetting all the leaves and dousing the plant repeat the dose if the plant is not dead the next day.
I have yet to try these methods so can't vouch for them!
