  • Flying insects nesting under the house?

Hope someone can advise! We have a lot of flying insects right beside the front door at home. They look like wasps but are a bit smaller. Yesterday I spotted lots of small holes in the border soil/grass (about 5mm diameter) and the insects are coming out of and going back into these holes. They seem to be most active from midday onwards.

We are worried that there is a nest in a cavity under the house as we have chipboard floors so Hubby called the council for advice. They said they'd get back to him but haven't heard anything yet.

Any advice about how to get rid of them will be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Julie.

Sounds like miner bees. Totally harmless. They live in the grass by next door's hedge. They won't be under the house, they live in holes in the soil. Enjoy them!

Yep, sounds like a solitary bee. They will pollinate your plants for you; only the females sting and it's pretty feeble. see links for more info: Solitary Bees

Thanks, that's reassuring - the imagination starts to run riot envisaging these insects coming up through the floor! They are a bit of a nuisance because they are so close to the front door but haven't tried to fly in when the door is open. I think I might have to cut back the plants nearby and try to encourage them to move.
