  • "Weed Wizard" - flame-gun.

Has anyone tried one of the small "Weed Wizards" you can buy
    for about £20 ?

I reckon the larger ones would work out more economical over the long term, for a large piece of ground, however, for a small area around the house, I think it may still be worth while.

Better than "Pathclear" for sure !

I have used one and to be honest I was not impressed!
Good points are no chemicals, you can stand up (unless you're tall), fun factor!
Bad points are environmental impact of gas and metal cylinder, takes forever to wilt even tiny weed seedlings - if you rush it they survive and you have to re-do them, if it's windy then don't even bother, the cylinders seem to run out quickly and setting light to wrong plants or even worse leaves in autumn thus resulting in burning leaves blowing round garden....
Sorry but I'd go for handweeding every time
Has anyone got on well with them - is it just me?

No it's not just you Vicky, OH bought one, used it once and gave up, totally useless. It doesn't get nearly hot enough to do the job and if you stand there long enough to do damage the gas soon runs out, plus the danger factor from burning yourself instead of the weeds. If your just clearing paths, use vinegar or bleach or even better, don't let the weeds mature and hand weed. If you use salt in the cracks on your path, the weeds don't like it and it helps get rid of slugs.

Hi Snadger, I have one of those blow up parrafin jobbies and it's brilliant. It sounds like a jet engine when its running, but it doesn't half clear the way.

I have been using one to clear weeds in the block paving of the drive for a couple of years and find it easy to use. I use the Weed Wand made by Parasene. Bought it through Garden Oasis and they still have it available. Weed Wand

I did read about someone who burnt down their neighbours fence one using one of these, so you do have to be careful how you use it!

I do all the gardening - as well as housework - because OH is registered disabled. I bought him one for his birthday last Nov. He can just about cope with this as he can use it while standing still. He uses it on the weeds between the slabs on the terrace and for use it works. Hope that helps someone.

I found it so good, when I sold my house I left it there,on purpose.Almost as useless as those battery mole scarers, don't know why but I brought those waste of money with me.

I bought one in my local Lidl, it was alot less than £20 with two bottles of propane for £12.99.

Works great on the path and driveway. I have also used it in the borders, but also like my hoe.

I use a similar one - not sure of make and find it does a grand job if used correctly. We have loads of gravelled area out tehy front which seem to be greener than the borders!!
