  • I've gawn right off mices!

Not so long ago I was a little upset to find a dead mouse in a bucket in the shed, he'd obviously fallen in and couldn't get out.

Tonight I was in the shed removing the melon, cauliflower, brussel and sunflower seedlings from the propagator and replacing them with some rosemary, thyme, oregana and sage seeds, when I noticed that the little green shoots that were in a number of pots on the shelving had disappreared.

Strange I thought, I'm sure some of those free bulbs I'd received as part of an order a little while ago were sprouting.

On closer inspection I found lots of little "holes" where the bulbs had been. The little blighters have been in and eaten the lot!! About 30-40 bulbs, gone.

They'd also eaten into a bag of bird seed that I'd stupidly left on the floor.

    Why I oughtta!

    hey wayne,

sorry what rubbish, i used to get loads of mice in my old house and had to invest in a few traps, hate to admit they were not humane ones either!!!! i hate them too.

By the way i looked at your blog as you not too far from me and your plot looks great and i am getting lots of tips

hope they dont come back again!!! if you need to get rid of them, use chocolate not cheese as they love this.

What a shame Hey Wayne and I'm sure you've figured it out. If they've been there and found food - they'll be back.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

        Thanks Su

Whereabouts in sunny Beds are you?

There are loads of cats that come into our garden, I can only assume that they're rubbish mice catchers!

I think I'm going to have to invest in some tins and such to keep things in now. Not sure I can use traps, I'm a big jessie like that.

          hi wayne

i am in dunstable, where the sun shines (well sometimes), i back onto Blows Downs, by the major Tesco and have lots of wildlife around which is good. Last year i caught over 30 mice in my old house!!! yuk! but i did use the "tom & jerry" traps!

i got used to it in the end it wasnt nice, but i did it!!!!

this is my first year growing, before i had stones & decking in the garden and now have a lovely patch, so bring on the sun, i want to get fresh veg!!

i will keep an eye on your blog to see how you are doing, i am gonna keep a home diary so i know what went well etc, cant do it on the internet everyone would laugh at my failed attempts! lol.

I know the bulls head (I think that's what they call that big lump of chalk on the downs) well, some nice walks behind you. I'm currently sat about a mile away from the Tescos of which you speak, and I grew up just over the road (Lewsey Farm, but keep that to yourself).

Get yerself down to Wilkos in Dunstable, I think someone posted on here that the mini 4 tier greenhouses are on offer. Might be worth getting yourself one to give you a bit of a headstart.

Trust me, no-one would laugh. It's part of the fun getting things wrong. It's a sure fire way of remembering next time. There's a saying - the best way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once. I guess the same can be said of veg growing. Get stuck in.

            Good luck.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, thanks for checking the blog, but you might be better advised to look at some of the other grapes if you want to do things right. I'm new too.
