  • Cheap Netting Suggestions to keep out the moggies?

I planted out my onion sets this weekend into a raised bed. Went out tonight and it would seem that the local cats are using it like their new en-suite and flicking around my beautiful, strategically spaced onions.

Any suggestions for some cheap and cheerful netting/raised bed protection. I have 7 beds each 1.2m x .2m.

Twiggy pea sticks, holly twigs or as my beds are currently empty I've just got bamboo canes laying across the beds.....I didn't have anything until I caught nextdoors cat "at it" the other night!!!
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

You could try your local charity shops for some net curtains.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

i was told to fill an empty bottle of lemonade with water and place this in your beds and apparently it keeps the cats away!!!! dont know if it works, i dont get any cats - well not at the minute - they still remember my dog before she passed.

          Good luck

            How does that work?

I have a dog, he's still a pup (see avatar), obviously not making much of an impression on the local felines. I have a cat too, bet you it was him the little brat.

              Hi there,

I have no rhyme or reason as to how it works, but my cousin used to do it around her garden and there were always cats there, but they never strayed on the veg - its cheap so worth a go, just drink lots of lemonade and then pee in the composter lol :-)

I think they defo have to be clear, i will try them as well, let me know how you get on if you decide to try it!

i know how that feels lol - i used to have two lovely doggies, a dalmation and a gorgeous german shepherd, but lost them both now, but rosey the GS is up the garden with roses all around her and she guards my dalek!!

Just been on the slug/snail hunt and found out where the snails like to party - right by my sunflowers!!!!!!! no more ha ha ! i gatecrashed and crushed!!
                  lol:-)

                  I will exterminate!

Admittedly I only had a small area, about 4' square to protect, but my cat and the neighbours moggie were using it as a dust bath (mmm must water more!) just as my salad veg were coming through. I made 'fences' of a horizontal bamboo pole on sticks about 6" above the ground on either side, then just wrapped string over in a zig-zag so there was about 4" spacing along the pole.

It seems to work, the cats just sit on the (empty) soil around it. They could go on, or under but they just don't seem to want to - perhaps the string worries them and they fear getting tied up, dunno but if the explanation isn't clear (well it is late), I'll post something more sensible tomorrow!

I've not done it myself but I understand that a number of kebab sticks stuck in the soil will deter cats from trying to perform their natural functions on your crops. After all, a stick up the bum often offends!

Not tried this so I can't comment on its efficacy.

Tie cotton round short sticks and criss-cross them about (like a web), cats don't like putting their feet into them. *shrugs - sounds like it ought to work.
