  • Currant Problems

I've just paid my first visit to the allotment in a while and noticed that the leaves on my red and white currants, and my gooseberries looked as if they'd been splashed with red paint. The leaves themselves seemed healthy and some blackcurrants growing about fifteen feet away are apparently unaffected. Not all the leaves were showing these signs. I have searched for anything which resembles this and can't find anything. Sorry, can't post a photo as I pulled all the leaves showing these signs off before I thought that a picture might be useful.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Who's eating my new berries ?

New berries disappearing (both on red and black plants) .... white goey deposits arriving on stems.
    Who's eating my berries ?

Hello & welcome to the vine. Birds are normally the culprit where berries are being eaten. Many growers net their fruit bushes to keep them off.

More about missing red & black (though now still green !) currants

Thanks for reply Bigmallly, but these are in a birdproof Fruit Cage.

I wonder about snails, as I see occasional TINY ones on leaves - but they are so small and there are so many missing berries.
(I've sprinkled slug pellets under bushes, but of course not on leaves)

I was hoping someone could identify the "white goey deposits on stems", as these are
new and surely are connected with the culprit ?
        And what to do ?

            Sounds like Cuckoo spit.
