I don't think it's a good thing. Can you get to see last night's Gardeners World on iplayer perhaps, there was a spot about them on there. I think it may be a Scarlet lilly beetle
    Some info here

That sounds like the dreaded lily beetle. Check out your plants and make sure to kill them as you find them. Also look for their eggs, they will look like orange beads on the underside of the leaves. Kill them all. If they're only on one plant put it in isolation away from any other lilys you may have.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

It's bound to be lily beetle. Although they look very pretty I'd squash any you see & check the leaves of your lily to see if there are any tiny orangey-red eggs & remove them also. If they've already bred you'll see slimey bugs on the leaves as they develop, squash these too or you'll end up with lilies fuull of holes or eaten to the ground. I found 3 in the last week so they're on the prowl! Here's a pic. of one I found last week.

You need to kill the larvae too - they look like bird crap on the leaves (they cover themselves in their own excrement - charming).
Left alone, they will destroy all your lilies, no kidding. Get rid. Check your plants weekly as more will fly in to have a free lunch.

I let my chooks free range yesterday. They ate a few lily beetles then ate the lillies.

If you've got one then you'll have loads, keep checking and squash any on sight, they're terrible things that have only recently been found this far north. Climate change has a lot to answer for....................

Just a note to say you have to be sneaky with the little blighter's too I have found a good way it to put a bowl under the leaf that its sitting on before it dives head first for cover ,and if you miss first time go back the next day.

I didn't know to look for the eggs, so this is great information

Oh yes - they are quick workers. I am killing 3 adults a day on average, and still finding holes in leaves, and eggs under leaves. No larvae yet thank goodness ( they are 'gusting: look in my album on here for close ups)

Strangely enough we get loads of them in the back garden to the point I've given up growing lillies there but they seem fine on the front and it's not exactly like our house is a mansion so it's not far away.
