  • Good or bad butterfly?

    Hi

I've just caught in a jar a butterfly that was fluttering in my kitchen. It's small, yellow with brown markings at the edge of it's wings. Is this a beneficial butterfly or a butterfly that will lay eggs that will devour my veg?

One way to tell moths and butterflies apart is to watch them when they are resting. Most butterflies rest with their wings held together above their back, while the majority of moths rest with their wings folded flat.

Mine is resting it's wings folded flat so it's a moth. A good or bad moth, I don't know.

Either way I'd let it go.

I've just found it UKMoths - Brimstone Moth Opisthograptis luteolata and released it as it appears harmless to veg.
