  • Lilly Beetle

Anyone growing lillies beware the lilly beetle is about. If you don't know what it looks like it is a very bright red and cannot be mistaken. I have found that vigilence and thumb and forefinger is the best form of control. I usually get them every year but have always managed to keep them under control.

The eggs are bright red too - crush them with your fingers.

I've not seen any yet but the chickens do help out with beetle patrols!
Just wish they wouldn't eat the bleedin' lillies too...

Just to let you know I caught and dispatched the cunning little critter by holding a piece of paper I had folded in a V shape just below it and it worked....

Not really- we are in the North- so the weather is very similar to S England.
We have a lot of wild flowers incorporated into dry stone walls- it's only our first proper year here and we're slowly moving our plants across the Channel!!!- The locals do seem to like Iris and roses and hydrangea .

Next year my lilies will be here for me to enjoy!!

I had a mini plague of lily beetles a couple of weeks ago, I usually go out with a paper tissue & try & wrap it round under where they are & push them off into it & squash them before they realise, hate killing anything but they aren't a native species & are very destructive. Here's a pic. of two I caught 'at it' on one of my lilies!
