Coffee Grounds

Just managed to beg some coffee grounds from our local coffee house to use on my war against slugs. Have spread around my plants, but please can someone advise me if I need to re apply when it rains, or does it still work if they are wet?

Are they supposed to be effective, then? I always dispose of my coffee grounds on the veg patch and I have the biggest plague of slugs known to man! Do I need to drink more coffee?!?!?

Just put some coffee grounds round some newly planted plants today so watch this space! I was a bit worried the grounds might 'scorch' or damage the leaves .... *sigh*

I've got them as a mulch round my courgettes which are so far untouched by slimy beast. Don't know if that's down the the grounds or not, but Alys on Gardeners' World reckons they keep them off.

i use them, but you need to replemish at least one a week and home made slug taps are great (reminds me i need to empty and re-beer!!)

i been out tonight and lobbed 30+ snails in salty water and cut up a fair few slugs as well, god hope this rain stops!!

I didn't realise that spent coffee grounds were a good defence against slug and snail.

I do however have a use for 'spent' snails.

Those that fall foul to my traps and are subsequently emptied of contents are used as lightweight drainage for early-ish stage potting on execises. I guess the empties could also be crushed and used as an abrasive surround - but you'd need so many.

I'll be adopting the coffee grinds method soon too. My brother-in-laws' girlfriend works at a brasserie and has kindly started bringing their coffee grinds home for me.

If nothing else, my plot should smell nice.

Hi all
This coffee lark sounds to good to be true.
Does the coffee make the wee beasties hyper?
Will it damage their health if we give them to much (government health guide lines).
Is Columbian better?

Seriously though can someone please tell me how much to use and how often.

My daughter works at Cafe Nero and they chuck tons of coffee grounds away every day. So if you go in, they'll be pleased if you take it off their hands. I have been a bit timid putting the stuff on, but will be a bit more brave now I've read some of the above replies. I have a huge binbag full of the stuff.

The couple who have the other half of my plot have put coffee grounds around their runner bean plants. There is no slug damage (but the plants are twitchy and can't sleep!) but there isn't any on my climbing french beans either. Jury still out here!
