Certainly very similar. Except that this one has side shoots from the leaf axils instead of the flower stalks(?) in the diagram.

Is there a free ID service from ths RHS or anyone similar ?

I'd hate to have something notifiable and not know. Maybe if I send them a photo and claim it's jap knoweed, they'll tell me what it really is !!

      Hi

It looks like it might be enchanters nightshade (Circaea lutetiana). If it is, then not a huge problem weed to get rid of, but very annoying as it does spring up everywhere at this time of year!

Think I will agree with Keener - Enchanters nightshade (not related to 'normal' nightshades)

I've had the same suggestion from someone else but I'm still not convinced. However, without a flower I have no other suggestions so I'm happy to go with that for now !

Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully it'll bloom soon (if the sun ever comes out long enough).

It reminds me of Russian Vine.

I've got enchanter's in my garden - not so red-looking as that and the leaves are longer. However, there's a lot of variety in nature!
