got a load of conifer tress to get rid of. Can I shred them and use them for compost if so how long will they take to rot?

Welcome to the Vine Taffworm. I think you can shred your conifers and use it for compost, but I think it will all be pretty acid. It will be fine if you want to top dress rhododendrons and other acid loving plants.
If you want to compost the chippings - well how long it will take to break down will depend on the quality of your heap and what else yo can put in there.
