Anyone else seem to notice that slugs don't like vermiculite?

Slugs don't like crawling over anything dry or prickly. That's why it's recommended to use vermiculite, shingle, sharp sand, etc around plants which you wish to protect from slugs. -
I have no problems with slugs my (fat) frogs deal with them.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.
