  • strange weed question

i have just been out in the garden and theres loads of things sprouting that shouldn't be .... i think one of them is chickweed, some are nettles, and theres loads i have absolutely no idea what they are.

the weird thing is, i've lived here nearly four years, and never had any of these weeds before, all my neighbours gardens are beautiful, without weeds, and if it was just one or two, i could understand it, but theres hundreds of the damned things ....... theres always the odd dandelion, but nothing like the scale of nettles and chickweed that's appeared, is very confuddled

they are only in the flower bed at the front, theres none in the back garden (yet)

oh and i just found a red woodlouse, i've had albino ones before but never a red one

Something probably seeded itself; have you got a piccie and we can diagnose. It might be something nice - you never know!

"theres loads of things sprouting that shouldn't be"

I was pulling up weeds in the radish bed yesterday ... until I spotted the radishes in the bed next door, and discovered I was pulling up Rocket

My silly fault for not labelling them. Yup. Except I had done

READING the labels would have been a smart move ...

camera batteries are flat, i'll charge them and try later, i could understand something seeding itself it it had been there already, but i've never had nettles, even when i moved in after the garden being neglected for years there weren't any. and i've never seen the chickweed thing either, just find it very strange

i've done that before too lol, now after my first bed having loads of unidentifiable veggies in it, i've labelled everything, and read them

but these definitely arent flowers i've planted, and there was only primroses, dandelions, buttercups and bluebells and a couple of crappy shrubs and bits of grass in there before, and it's none of them and i dug them all out anyway.

Weed seeds can lie dormant in the ground for years, that is until an unsuspecting gardner decides to stick a spade in and turn them to the surface, then they all germinate at once, esp. at this time of year

Have you been spreading compost around Lynda, or planting plants from the garden centre. Sometimes these things are sources of weed seeds. Well I blame garden centre compost for the hairy bittercress.
Do post a pic or two.

no, in the bed concerned, i've only planted seeds .... looking at how crap the soil is i should have put some compost in, but i didn't have any at the time, this is the first year i've done anything at all with the bed .... i guess it must be like terrier says, and they were dormant, flipping annoying though, cos i've loads of plant seeds coming up, and i don't know which are weeds, and which are flowers till they get bigger, so i can't even hoe it to get rid of them, oh well, the flowers are all starting to grow bigger now, so hopefully before long i can get rid of them
