Chomping rose leaves

My friend says something is chomping the leaves on her roses but leaving the veins, whatever it is now seems to have gone from the roses to the gooseberries. She can't see anything that would be causing it. Don't have any further information, any suggestions as to what it might be would be very welcome.

Usually it's a tiny caterpillar - really, they are so small they are hard to see. I just pick them off as I see them.
