Absolutely NO point in throwing them over the fence. Someone carried out an experiment once by putting a dab of tipex on the shell of each shell she threw over the fence. The experiment proved that the snails keep coming back. Doesn't matter how many times you theow 'em. I couldn't kill a spider, no matter how big, but slugs and snails ....sorry they have to go!!

I think I'll have to 'humanely euthanise' some of the slugs in my garden. I stood on one with my bare feet today!! Yuck!!
I am still ashamed about killing the spider Jools, but it was sooo big...I was scared!I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

my chickens are picky and won't eat slugs.... because of all the rain here they've reached epidemic proportions.
I've used all sorts, but find the Growing Success organic blue pellets (iron-based as opposed to metaldehyde-based) to work well... although my plot is fenced off from the chickens.
Except that the rain washes them away (sigh)
I'm considering getting some ducks.... only because I can't find any hedgehogs...
Do toads eat the big slugs ??Last edited by Twinkle; 25-08-2008, 01:48 PM.

I use the Growing Success organic pellets which I got from Wyevales and they are pretty effective, although as Twinkle says they do wash away quite quickly. Ironic really as they are more effective if wet! I use them under netting though, but they are supposed to be safe for the birds etc
