Pesky caterpillars

Hi All you growers, Just registered so this is my first go, hope its right.

[B]Caterpillars[B]Went on holiday,had a lovely time, came home and my brocalli and sproats have been desimated. They were holding parties on the stalks that were left. I set about removing them by hand, think I've got them all now but the crops ruined.

Question is how do I stop this happening again can I spray the plants to stop the butterflys laying or do I cancel all hols and stay vigilent. Perplexed.

Also my young daughter insisted on naming everyone as I pulled them off and she's now accused me of murder.

Hope one of you can advise..
