  • Spider Id Please

It's the time of year where every nook and crannie has it's own spider (ah the joys of country life )

I've found one that I haven't seen before.

Small body long legs (particularly the front ones). The whole thing is about an inch across (inc. legs)

My largest one is carrying something (egg sack ?)
Recently two more have joined it. They just sit there staring at each other doing not very much.

I've attached a (poor) picture. Didn't want to get too close incase they jumped at me !

I'd look on the web for an ID but I'm too scared I might come across one of those closeups with eyes

So Please, Please... no eye links

we've got loads of these in our house. I tell everyone they're my pets, so they think I'm mad instead of lazy. I know it's not a House Spider, because they are bigger & fatter.

I think everyone gets those - I just think of them as 'house spiders'. Madmax and I decorated the sitting room not long ago and even after hoovering every corner and painting the whole room, we had these little cherubs with lovely new webs next morning!

I've had a Google, and think it might be a Pholcus phalangioides, aka Daddy Long Legs (although that's what I call a Cranefly)

I think it's called a Huntsman spider (could be very wrong though!). Got 1 in my dowstairs loo and it dangles between the washbasin and the wall staring at me whenever I go in there . I don't really like spiders at all, especially the ones that you can hear clumping across the carpet
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I still think it's the Daddy Long Legs one. You'll have to get in and take a macro photo, Maf.

Yep, Pholcus phalangoides, not that widespread but locally common, if you see what I mean. Daddy long legs are crane flies though, not to be confused!

I am surprised to find spiders put amongst the "pests etc" as surely they are helpers in the garden. I always make sure that I have a good collection in the greenhouse and am happy to see them on fruit and vegetable plants. The number of real pests that they slaughter must be tremendous.

as longg as they stay in the garden they are useful, as soon as they come in my house, they are cat food....... i can't get rid of them, so the dog and cats are always trained to kill........ *shudders*

I just catch them by slapping a whisky glass over them and slipping a post card underneath them and putting them outside - whatever kind they are.
But it is interesting to get names for the different kinds.
So far this year not many - but maybe early days. I don't really like them - especially the big ones with boxing gloves on.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
