  • Rust !

I have rust on my leeks! I can still use them but I was going to plant my winter onions close by- I have no other space. Will the onions automatically 'catch' the rust?
    What is it?
    How did I get it?
    Can I organically treat it?

    help please!

I strip off the affected leaves and burn them and eat the rest!

    I found this....

Yep, mine got rust too, but as Nicos says I took off the affected leaves. I did give them a booster feed of blood, fish and bone and am keeping fingers crossed that they'll be okay.

        Hmm......been thinking

I put my leeks in the same place as my beans ( last year)
...beans are nitrogen fixing...leek rust thrives in nitrogen rich soil..ergo....

        problem solved?????.....

I was to plant the winter onions close by? will they stand any chance of being rust free!

It says on that site I posted that it's different and doesn't transfer.
However-if it's the same conditions- you'll have to wait and see I think!
Just make sure they aren't planted too close together.

HF I had rust on my garlic this year but the onions next door were rust free, I don't know if that helps?

Thanks lainey lou..... there only hope as I have no other choice!

odd, you practice crop rotation, which means you tend to keep the Allium family together, yet if one gets rust you stand a mighty chance of them all getting it. hmmmmm is that the way to go?
