  • Hornets!

We've hung up a glass bell-shaped fly trap near our fruit trees to try and catch some of the wasps which are eating the windfalls.
The flies are attracted by jammy water and fly in from underneath. They then are supposed to be trapped as they can't work out that they have to fly downwards to escape.

Well......it's full of bluebottles and that sort of fly..but not as many as I'd expected- and certainly no wasps!

But.....I've just been watching several hornets fly up into the jar, grab a dead fly and then carefully climb out with it in their mouthparts ...and off to the nest!
I thought it was one trapped hornet but there seem to be several of them working in convoy!!!! Clever or what??!

...and no...no wasps to be seen!

Apparently hornets will happily kill wasps and bees!

I tried this to keep the wasps off the plums and it worked a treat. Drowned millions of the b**gers (and before any 'bleeding heart' types give me grief for killing things, please bear in mind I'm super allergic and go into anaphyllactic shock if stung - it's them or me in this one case!)

Maybe your wasps have moved on? They certainly didn't manage to fly out of our jars.
        Cheers

I'm wondering if the hornets have had them- either from the nest in our barn ( no noise at all now) ...or they've picked them out from the jar???
