We've hung up a glass bell-shaped fly trap near our fruit trees to try and catch some of the wasps which are eating the windfalls.
The flies are attracted by jammy water and fly in from underneath. They then are supposed to be trapped as they can't work out that they have to fly downwards to escape.
Well......it's full of bluebottles and that sort of fly..but not as many as I'd expected- and certainly no wasps!
But.....I've just been watching several hornets fly up into the jar, grab a dead fly and then carefully climb out with it in their mouthparts ...and off to the nest!
I thought it was one trapped hornet but there seem to be several of them working in convoy!!!! Clever or what??!
...and no...no wasps to be seen!
