    Hi,

Thought I would start a new thread on this.

I have two young Olive trees, no more than 2ft high, both in tubs which were supplied with the plants. They both sit each side of the rear door which is south facing. However, one appears healthy but I have noticed that the other one has become taken on a black sooty appearance! It is all over the tree – on the leaves as well as the trunk – and the tiny olives have shrivelled and gone black also.

    I have attached photos.

    Can anyone help?

    Regards,

have no idea, but,if you not had them long, how about taking it back to the supplier, maybe it was infected before you got it,5 years ago i got several gerba plants for table decorations, and they all 1 by 1 bit the dust, with a type of fungus, now i only had them a few days prior to the party, and then they went to different people,i wish i had complained,

Is it sooty mould? Does it wash off? I'd try to clean it off with soapy water.

not sure if its the same thing but i had something like this on my lemon tree, on the leaves above were some scale insects - I removed all the scale insects and cleaned off the leaves with black stuff on. I check the plant quite often now and remove any scale insects i find, I've not had any more black stuff since.

This usually happens when a palnt has been attacked by a pest like greenfly which secrete honey dew. The sooty mould forms on the honeydew even though the greenfly have departed. You may be able to wash it off with soapy water as it will block the plants pores!
