ok, normally i have flat stones in the garden which i check under now and again for slugs, ...... about 3 days ago, i put some cardboard down in the front garden to suppress weeds, will put some compost down on it eventually......... but i thought i'd check under for slugs, there were hundreds of the little darlings ...... all polished off in minutes by the chickens, but it's much more effective at slug trapping than anything else i've come across, and not a slug pellet in sight

i've a few things down, but they do seem particularly attracted to the cardboard, they seem to think it's tasty too lol ..... mind you, thinking about how many people have put cardboard on their veg beds as weed suppressant, it's no wonder there are slug problems,

well yesterday i put some fresh cardboard down, checked it today, and not a one, yet the stuff that's been down a week or 2 had loads under again, in fact so many i had to save some till tomorrow as the chooks wouldn't eat em all, i'm definitely going to go and get a load more cardboard, i've only got it on about a 1/4 of the garden, and they are all small ones too, so they must have hatched in the soil ready for munching my freshly planted veg in a couple of months, glad i decided to do it now, before they start breeding.

well you could just stick em in a pot and pour salt on em or put vaseline covered in salt round the top of the pot, and put them out for the birds, they don't escape then
ok, todays update ...... 3 slugs lol .... i'm reckoning that they have been growing in the soil and the cardboard has warmed it up, and they have come up, but now they are all gone on that bit of the garden, dunno if that's right ....... anyway, have moved the pieces of cardboard to a different bit, to test the theory, so will leave a week to see if theres another thousand on that bit, really must get more cardboard if that works.Last edited by lynda66; 29-01-2009, 04:41 PM.

ok had to check (far too impatient to wait a week), today slug count 12 .... and under the new pieces of cardboard, 3 ..... so if the theory is correct, there should be more as the days go by for some reason the chicks didn't want slugs for lunch today, so i've given the slugs a half dead broccoli leaf till tomorrow, don't want em dying of starvation before they get eatenLast edited by lynda66; 30-01-2009, 03:28 PM.
