I'm sure they have got those things on the end, like hooks, but mine have also got a definate black/brown head, well they are more like pincers, when it starts moving it sticks its "head" out and it the head goes flat and seems to turn into pincers. YUCK

Bad. Their larvae (leatherjackets) eat lawn roots. And badgers will dig up your lawn trying to get at the leatherjackets.Originally posted by -pat m View Post

I have seen the bugs in the original question before and believe they are click beetle larvae. From the phots I think they are 1/2 to 1" long are yellowy white in colour with little dark brown heads. I get the occasional one and squish em. cut worms cannot be missed they are huge in comparison and curl up in a C pattern with dark head and a grasping way of moving. Keep trning the ground and squish em and if poss let the birds get in and eat them. good luck everyone for a new growing seasonComment

Click Beetle larvae are wireworms. Orange things, totally unlike the photos on this thread.

two sheds. saw your comment and had a second look. they can be anything from orange to white as the species of click beetle is not difinativly identified. so I disagree with you they are clicks.Comment

Hi Lez, had a look at the click beetles, they do look a bit like mine, but seem a bit thinner and harder looking than what I have and to be honest, cleaner! It is hard to judge from a photo and I know my photos are not that great. Mine are also quite dull in colour, not white or orange, but I think they are still quite small so who knows what they will turn into! Im keep looking in my jam jar but they are still just little dirty grubs at the moment. The nearest I can compare them to so far is Snagers suggestion of bibionid larvae, although they seem to have more legs than mine do. Also mine are sort of see through, you can see some sort of black thing inside them.
Whatever they are I HATE THEM.

Have just looked in the jam jar and they have turned creamy white, no longer translucent and have shrunk a bit and the top of them seems to be getting bigger, like its changing into a head,.....will keep you posted.Comment

They've hatched!
Well, they have finally hatched in the jam jar and I think you were right Snadger, they do look like Bibionid flies-I cant find very many images of them though so I am going to keep looking. Must be the day for hatching today as there are loads of them in the jam jar. YUCK.
I have tried to take some pictures to show you but the jam jar has a pattern on it on the side so that makes it distorted and there is cling film over the top which also stops me being able to take a decent image.

I have found more images, and I was hoping they were St Mark flys , but I think they are fever flies which look similiar, but St Mark flys are a hairy, mine dont seem hairy. UUHHHHHHHHHComment
