  • Slug Buggers - the product not the swear word!

Though I'm sure the slugs get called worse things....lol

Anyone seen or used a new product called Slug Buggers (pardon my language, but that's what they're called!)

They're made of sheeps wool and poo made into pellets which you put round your plants. It "melts" down into a rough ring that stops slugs from reaching your brassicas etc. All natural and becomes a useful mulch, being water retentive.

Available from greengardeners.co.uk. Might be too new for anyone to have an opinion but thought it was a interesting idea.

The premise being that if sheep don't get slugs...? How does it work on the actual slugs ? (I may seem like a sceptical Aberdonian here, but I'm just afraid of getting fleeced ! )
            How much is it ?

More a case of baaaaaaa humbug i reckon!

                  Here you go:
'Successfully trialled at RHS Harlow Carr, Slug Wool is an organic slug barrier and soil conditioner in one. The raw material - reclaimed wool - is extruded to form woollen pellets which create a 12 month biodegradable insulation blanket around plants which also causes irritation to the nerve endings in the slugs foot, persuading them not to cross. Supplied in an easy to store and apply 3.5 ltr tub.

                  • Made from reclaimed wool
                  • Pellets sprinkled around susceptible plants
                  • Safe for children, pets and wildlife
                  • Surface of the woollen pellets irritates the sensitive slug's foot, dissuading it fom crossing
                  • Woollen pellets are 100% natural and environmentally responsible
                  • Contain N,P and K which is released into the soil
                  • Slug Buggers should not be used as bait, but use to create a barrier around vulnerable plants by spreading in an unbroken circle about 3in wide.
                  • Supplied in a 3.5ltr re-sealable tub'

The 3.5ltr tub on this site is £9.99. I think its a baaaaaaaaaaargain if it lasts 12 months!!:

Sounds interesting Selfraising. Do you put a ring round each bed or round individual plants? I wouldn't think 3.5 litres would go very far

I've done both really. I've put a ring round certain plants like my delphiniums which the slugs love and then a large ring to the edge of my raised veg bed as a barrier. One bucket doesn't last that long but if it does what it says, you shouldn't have to replace it for 12 months and I figured the amount I bought in slug pellets last year well exceeded the amount I would use of this stuff. WWF site shop sells 2 for £17.99 so it pays to shop around. This is my first year of using it so I'll be interested to see how it goes, so far, so good!

I'm gonna have a look in Poundland tomorrow because I think I saw some Doff Slug Attack & Snail Killer..... Judging by the little bage on Doff page I take it that it's child and animal friendly.
