Looks like a leatherjacket to me - larvae of the crane-fly (daddy long legs)

Its a leather jacket, the birds love em.
Dont panic too much, they just nibble on soft roots, preferably grass.
you will never get rid of them all, like slugs unless you see the damage or pest you will never know they are there.Blogging at..... www.thecynicalgardener.wordpress.com
